BVLOS Drone Operations

BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line Of Sight) operations enable scalable monitoring, inspection and survey missions to be performed over large areas without the constraints of VLOS (Visual Line of Sight). The Vertical Co delivers regulated BVLOS operations under CASA approvals and manages all governance, flight logging and operational documentation under our ReOC.

What You Get

  • The Vertical Co as an operator of record under a CASA ReOC
  • BVLOS planning, risk management and operational documentation
  • Broad Area BVLOS approvals for a faster approval process in some areas
  • Operation from our Remote Operations Centre based in Melbourne
  • Airspace coordination and stakeholder engagement (including local and private aerodromes)
  • NOTAM origination capability for defined flight windows (where required)
  • Mixed airspace experience (controlled, non-controlled and military environments where applicable)
  • EVLOS/VLOS options for on-site demonstration and capability studies
  • Fully qualified and trained pilots with IREX or OCTA ratings

Our operations are delivered within a structured Safety Management System supported by AVCRM. This includes documented risk assessments, checklists, incident reporting and a continuous improvement processes.

Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) – FAQs

BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) refers to drone operations conducted beyond the direct visual range of the pilot. These operations require structured risk assessment, regulatory approval and formal operational governance. BVLOS enables efficient monitoring of large areas such as agricultural properties, infrastructure corridors and remote sites.

Yes. The Vertical Co delivers BVLOS drone operations in Australia under our CASA-issued Remote Operator’s Certificate (ReOC). Where applicable, operations are conducted under approved frameworks including Broad Area BVLOS models.

No. We operate as the operator of record under our ReOC. This means regulatory approvals, flight logging and operational governance remain managed within our framework. Clients gain capability without assuming regulatory burden.

Yes. BVLOS is particularly suited to regional and remote environments where large areas need structured monitoring. Site-specific assessment is conducted prior to activation to ensure operational suitability.

BVLOS operations are supported by structured risk assessment, airspace review and stakeholder coordination where required. As a certified NOTAM originator, we can issue NOTAMs for defined flight windows when appropriate.

Operations near aerodromes require structured coordination and risk assessment. Where appropriate, we engage with local operators and implement mitigation measures to ensure safe integration with other airspace users.

When delivered within a structured regulatory framework, BVLOS operations are designed to be controlled, documented and risk-assessed. Our operations are conducted within a formal Safety Management System supported by AVCRM compliance software.

Broad Area BVLOS is an operational framework that enables drone operations across defined geographic regions rather than requiring site-specific approvals for each mission. Under this model, operational areas are assessed, documented and approved within an established governance structure. The Vertical Co’s Chief Remote Pilot is a CASA Responsible Person authorised to assess and approve operational areas under our Broad Area BVLOS instrument, allowing structured deployment across suitable environments. This supports scalable monitoring programs while maintaining documented risk management and compliance oversight.

Yes. The Vertical Co operates under a CASA-issued ReOC and holds Broad Area BVLOS approvals where applicable. Our Chief Remote Pilot, acting as a CASA Responsible Person, is authorised to assess and validate operational areas in accordance with our instrument and Safety Management System. This enables efficient deployment across multiple sites without re-establishing approvals for each individual mission, subject to site suitability and risk assessment.

A Responsible Person under CASA is an individual formally recognised within an operator’s regulatory framework to exercise defined operational authority. Within our organisation, the Chief Remote Pilot is authorised to assess, document and approve operational areas under our Broad Area BVLOS instrument. This ensures decisions are made within a structured, accountable governance model aligned with CASA requirements.

The Vertical Co operates a remote operations model that enables oversight of autonomous and BVLOS missions from a centralised control environment.

Our Remote Operations Centre supports:

• Mission scheduling and flight activation
• Live situational awareness where required
• Operational logging and compliance documentation
• System health monitoring for drone-in-a-box deployments
• Incident response and escalation pathways

This model ensures operations remain governed and documented even when flights occur at geographically distributed sites.

Not necessarily. Depending on the operational model and regulatory framework, flights may be managed remotely under our oversight. Where appropriate, site staff may participate in VLOS or EVLOS operations following suitable training, while governance remains under our ReOC.
